Learn to Ride School Holiday Program FAQs
Who is the Learn to Ride School Holiday Program for?
The AusBike Learn to Ride School Holiday Program is designed for children aged 4 to 12 who are learning to ride a bike, building confidence, or developing their bike handling skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Children are grouped according to their riding ability, so they do not need to be at the same skill level when they arrive.
Does my child need to know how to ride a bike already?
No. This program is specifically designed for children who are learning to ride.
Our qualified coaches help children develop the key skills needed for independent riding, including balance, braking, steering, starting and stopping. Riders who are new to cycling receive structured support, while more confident riders continue progressing their control and confidence.
Can my child attend if they use training wheels?
Yes. Children can arrive with training wheels fitted to their bike.
During the session, coaches may remove training wheels and guide children through the transition to independent riding using proven learn-to-ride techniques. This approach helps children develop balance more effectively and build confidence riding without assistance.
Every child progresses at their own pace, with coaches providing hands-on support, clear instruction and plenty of encouragement throughout the session.
How will my child be grouped?
At the beginning of the session, coaches assess each child's riding ability and place them in the most appropriate group.
Children learning the basics focus on foundational bike skills, while independent riders work on more advanced control, braking, turning and manoeuvring skills.
Groups may be adjusted during the session to ensure every child is learning at the right level.
What will my child learn?
The program is based on AusBike's Core4Skills™ framework, which helps children develop the fundamental skills needed to ride safely and confidently.
Throughout the session, children will learn:
- Balance and bike control
- Starting and stopping safely
- Braking effectively
- Steering and turning
- Riding in a straight line
- Navigating simple riding courses
- Making safe decisions while riding
Sessions include skill stations, games and guided riding challenges that make learning fun while helping children progress towards independent riding.
Who delivers the program?
The program is delivered by qualified AusCycling coaches who are trained to provide safe, structured and age-appropriate cycling instruction.
All coaches hold the required child safety clearances and follow AusCycling's coaching and safety standards.
When does the session run and do parents need to stay?
Sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am.
Children under 10 years of age must have a parent or guardian remain at the venue for the duration of the session.
Parents and guardians of older children are welcome to stay and watch, but this is not required.
What does my child need to bring?
Each child should bring:
- A safe, working bicycle
- An Australian Standards-approved helmet
- Enclosed shoes
- Comfortable clothing suitable for riding
- A water bottle
- Sunscreen
- A snack
Please note that bicycles are not provided, so participants must bring their own bike.
Will my child's bike and helmet be checked?
Yes.
Before riding begins, coaches conduct a basic bike and helmet safety check to ensure equipment is safe, functional and correctly fitted.
If adjustments are needed, coaches will discuss these with parents or guardians before the session begins.
What if my child is nervous or has struggled to learn before?
That's completely normal.
Many children arrive feeling nervous or lacking confidence, particularly if they've had difficulty learning to ride previously. Our coaches focus on creating a positive, encouraging environment where children can learn at their own pace.
The emphasis is on small successes, building confidence and making riding enjoyable.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Participant safety is our priority.
If conditions such as heavy rain, lightning or extreme heat make riding unsafe, the session may be modified, postponed or cancelled.
Families will be contacted as early as possible if changes are required.
What happens after the program?
At the end of the session, families will receive guidance on their child's progress and recommended next steps.
Depending on their ability, children may:
- Continue practising key skills at home
- Attend additional AusBike Learn to Ride sessions
- Progress into other junior riding programs
- Join local cycling clubs or junior riding activities
The AusBike Learn to Ride School Holiday Program is designed to help children build confidence and take the next step in their cycling journey.
What is the refund policy?
We understand that plans can change.
Refunds may be available where sufficient notice is provided before the program, in accordance with the booking terms and conditions.
If your child is unable to attend, please contact AusCycling as soon as possible. Where a session is cancelled or significantly changed by AusCycling, families will be contacted directly regarding available options, which may include a transfer, credit or refund.
