The wheatbelt town of Trayning in Western Australia may only have 112 residents, but every child at the local primary school got a chance to shine when AusBike coaches Alan and Jan Gallatly delivered a two-day cycling immersion program.
Fourteen students from pre-primary to Year 6 took part, learning bike handling skills, road safety basics and how to change a tyre.
The program was praised by the school’s principal for keeping all students engaged and active, including those with special needs.
To keep the program accessible, the students were split into two groups: junior primary in the mornings and senior primary in the afternoons.
Highlights included a Year 3 boy, who had never ridden before, asking his mum for a bike after his first session.
And the school’s only Year 6 student handing her name tag to the coaches with the words: “So you won’t forget me.”
For coaches Alan and Jan, the smiles and confidence gained over two days showed exactly why bringing AusBike to small, remote communities matter.
