Riding a bike gives children a fun way to get active, build independence and explore the world around them. AusBike helps them develop the skills and confidence to get started.

Delivered by AusCycling, AusBike is Australia’s national bike education program for primary school students. Through practical, games-based activities, children learn how to ride safely and feel more comfortable on two wheels, all while having fun at school.

Whether they’re learning to ride for the first time or building on the skills they already have, AusBike gives every child the opportunity to get involved.

What do children learn through AusBike?

AusBike is all about learning by doing.

Sessions help children develop practical riding skills, including:

  • Balancing and controlling a bike
  • Starting, stopping, and braking
  • Steering and cornering
  • Looking and responding to their surroundings
  • Riding safely around other people

AusBike brings cycling into the school environment through practical, skills-based programs designed for students.

Children can progress at their own pace in a supportive environment, building their skills through activities that keep them moving and having fun.

The skills they learn can help them enjoy riding in all kinds of ways, from riding with family and friends to travelling to school or discovering a new sport.

How does AusBike work in schools?

Schools can choose from three ways to deliver AusBike, depending on their needs and resources:

  • Coach-led: Delivered by an accredited AusCycling coaches
  • Coach-supported: An AusCycling coach supports school staff to deliver the program alongside them.
  • Teacher-led: Delivered by an accredited teacher within the school.

Bike fleets and equipment can also be included, helping make AusBike accessible to schools and students who may not have their own bikes.

Why bring bike education to your school?

Bike education gives children more than the ability to ride a bike. It helps them develop balance, coordination, confidence, awareness, and independence, practical skills they can carry into everyday life.

For schools, AusBike provides an active and engaging way to support students’ physical development while giving them the confidence to be active on two wheels.

It’s also an opportunity to introduce children to a skill they can enjoy for life. Whether they ride for fun, to get around, with their family or as part of a sport, learning to ride opens up new ways to move, explore, and connect with their community.
